"I'm coming for you! Are you ready?"
Hearing the eerie voice, Chen Shang quickly scrambled down the wall, moving swiftly but as quietly as possible to the opposite side of the fourth floor. There were staircases on both sides of the hospital, and although the stairs on the second and third floors were made of stone and wouldn't make much noise, he had already made his presence known on this side. If he continued using the same stairs, there was a high chance the creature would catch up to him, so he decided to switch sides.
Thanks to his vampiric bloodline, Chen Shang could see clearly in the dark, which helped him avoid the scattered debris, rusty doors, and broken furniture that littered the hallway. Any misstep would result in a noise, potentially giving away his position. Moving quickly but carefully, he reached the stairs on the opposite side.
He slowed down to a crawl as he approached the stairwell. Holding his breath, he strained his ears to listen for any sounds. No rustling. Satisfied, he peeked down the stairs, scanning every corner. After confirming the area was clear, he breathed a sigh of relief.
Luckily, this little boss had the intelligence level of a child and wasn't capable of predicting Chen Shang's movements. There were no complicated mind games here, just basic "where the noise is, go there" logic.
Sneaking down the stairs toward the second floor, Chen Shang remained cautious. However, when he reached the first floor, he almost cursed out loud.
The entire hallway was filled with wandering figures—far more than the number of patients he'd encountered earlier. It seemed that after he had gone to the fourth floor, the remaining patients had somehow freed themselves from the third floor and had made their way down to the first.
While Chen Shang was contemplating how to sneak past the group, a lone patient staggered out of a nearby room, walking with a careless slouch, like a vagrant on the street.
Their eyes met.
Chen Shang didn't react, but the patient was about to scream.
With quick reflexes, Chen Shang pulled out a baton from his inventory and shoved it into the patient's mouth, silencing the scream before it could emerge.
Don't ask why Chen Shang had a baton. He had grabbed it from the security office at the beginning of this ordeal.
Not only did he manage to stop the scream, but he almost shoved the baton too far, nearly causing the poor guy to gag. Realizing this, Chen Shang quickly grabbed the patient's neck, hoisting him up and dragging him toward the hallway.
There was just enough moonlight filtering in from the windows to illuminate the scene. The other patients on the first floor looked up and saw Chen Shang, bathed in shadows, dragging one of their comrades by the neck—mouth stuffed with a baton.
To Chen Shang's surprise, the moment the patients saw him, they scattered like cockroaches in all directions, running in utter silence.
[Wow, I was expecting some intricate plan, but nope! The monsters just ran for it!]
[Patient: We're mentally unstable, not stupid!]
[The dumber ones already died on the third floor. The smarter ones know not to mess with this guy.]
[Stealth (Rambo mode)!]
As the patients fled, Chen Shang nodded in satisfaction. Good, they know what's up.
It was clear now that even the third-floor patients feared the spider-like creature on the fourth floor. This had been hinted at in the boy's diary—the other patients had warned him not to go to the fourth floor. That meant these patients were aware of the danger that lurked there.
Smiling, Chen Shang let go of the patient he was holding, allowing him to run away.
The baton can be a parting gift. Thought Chen Shang with a tinge of humor.
Initially, Chen Shang had thought the third-floor patients would rally together and try to ambush him as revenge for the massacre on their floor. But it seemed he had misunderstood their intentions—they had only fled to the first floor because they were afraid of him.
Little did these patients expect that the man who had gone full Rambo on the third floor was now descending to the first.
With the hallway clear, Chen Shang moved quickly through the hospital. By the time he reached the exit, the clock hanging above the door showed 4:00 AM—time for his patrol of C Building.
Chen Shang hesitated momentarily. While the task was to patrol C Building, just checking whether the power was working would technically complete the mission. He decided to head to C Building, reasoning that as long as the power was on, there shouldn't be much risk.
