Deputy Director Sun smiled wryly and shook his head, saying, "Yes, I've asked him many times, and it's clear that at this point, he has little interest in becoming a police officer."

The municipal party secretary said, "Ah... that's a pity."

The mayor added, "If he joined our police force and cracked a few more big cases, he'd surely become famous far and wide."

Deputy Director Sun nodded in agreement.

Seeing the mayor's regretful expression, Deputy Director Sun had another thought.

The mayor also served as Police Station chief. If Lin Chen joined and kept solving cases, the police leadership would all benefit greatly.

But unfortunately, Lin Chen's mindset was different from ordinary people — or rather, he was reluctant to be constrained by the system.

The leadership then discussed rewards for Lin Chen's case-solving and ended the meeting.

Meanwhile, at the Police Station, Zhang Tian'ai was busy with another case — the building fall Lin Chen had reported.

That case was being actively investigated, though there were many uncertainties, and Zhang Tian'ai planned to ask Lin Chen some questions.

...

The taxi stopped outside a commercial building. Lin Chen paid and entered with Xia Miaoyan.

The Rubik's Cube speedcubing competition was sponsored well, so it was held in a busy shopping mall.

On the first-floor lobby, a large area was cordoned off with tables set up for cube competitions.

Each table had a professional StackMat Generation 3 Timer. Many contestants had their participant cards and were ready to compete.

Many onlookers were present. Most people had tried the Rubik's Cube and admired those who could solve it in mere seconds.

Donglin University's Rubik's Cube Club brought over twenty people. The club president, Feng Qiming, came from a wealthy family. He founded the club and funded it personally.

Feng Qiming glanced toward the mall entrances, muttering, "Where is Miaoyan..."

At last, he saw Xia Miaoyan — but soon realized she wasn't alone; she was accompanied by a handsome young man.

"Hi, I'm late..."

Xia Miaoyan greeted the club members, who stared blankly at Lin Chen.

Though they might not know the university president's name, no one could forget Lin Chen.

This young man, their age, solved the Dismemberment Case in less than a day.

The members forgot Xia Miaoyan's greeting and walked up to Lin Chen, exchanging greetings. Several girls took out pens and paper, asking for his autograph and photos.

Lin Chen was speechless but accepted their enthusiasm.

Feng Qiming's face soured, noticing how close Xia Miaoyan was to Lin Chen — practically pressed against him.

A few club members noticed Feng Qiming's discomfort; they knew he was courting Xia Miaoyan.

Despite his wealth and status, Xia Miaoyan seemed uninterested, having rejected Feng Qiming several times.

"Hello, I'm Feng Qiming, club president." After everyone greeted Lin Chen, Feng Qiming offered his hand.

Lin Chen shook it without a word.

Feng Qiming smiled, "You came with Miaoyan — can you solve the cube? How long does it take you?"

"President, my Master can't solve the cube. I dragged him here for fun," Xia Miaoyan explained.

Hearing "Master," the group was curious. Xia Miaoyan explained her dream of becoming a police officer, well known among her friends.

"Detectives and cops, what's so great about them? Miaoyan, why choose such a hard job?" Feng Qiming scoffed when mentioning police and detectives.

Lin Chen wasn't a cop but a detective.

"Because I like it," Xia Miaoyan answered directly, leaving Feng Qiming speechless.

Others sensed Feng Qiming's hostility toward Lin Chen — anyone would be uneasy seeing their crush so close to a capable and handsome guy.

Lin Chen noticed and asked Feng Qiming, "Miaoyan says you're good at the cube. How fast can you solve one?"

"My best is 6.93 seconds," Feng Qiming said proudly.

"In Tianhai City, Feng's score ranks in the top five," a girl admired.

"6.93 seconds? That's kinda slow," Lin Chen said flatly.

Feng Qiming expected surprise but only got that response.

"Slow?" Feng Qiming sneered, "Do you know the World Record? The current record is 4.73 seconds, held by Australian Feliks Zemdegs. My best is 6.93 — pretty close to that."

Lin Chen reached out to a club member, "Give me a participant card. I'm going to break the World Record."
