Lin Chen heard this and said, "Oh really? Should I feel honored then?"

"No need, just take me as your apprentice and teach me how to solve cases," Xia Miaoyan said with a bright smile.

Lin Chen ignored her and, after putting on the underwear, opened the door and left.

Xia Miaoyan hadn't expected him to come out so quickly and still stood at the bathroom door, blushing instantly when she saw Lin Chen wearing only underwear.

Her eyes first scanned his tall figure, then accidentally glanced at a place she shouldn't have.

"Ah, Master, why didn't you say something when you came out?" She turned and rushed into her room.

"This is my home. Why would I report to you when I leave the bathroom?" Lin Chen said naturally.

He could tell Xia Miaoyan was inexperienced — though pretty and well-shaped, she had never had a boyfriend judging by her behavior and speech.

Lin Chen ignored her, returned to his room, put on a bathrobe, and lay down to read.

Soon, the sound of running water came from the bathroom — Xia Miaoyan was showering.

Hearing this, Lin Chen's mind wandered briefly but shook it off.

Just as he was about to sleep after reading, a knock sounded at the door.

"What is it?" Lin Chen asked.

"Master, can I come in?" Xia Miaoyan's voice came.

Lin Chen said yes, and she entered.

She was holding a blanket and pillow. Lin Chen asked, "What's this for?"

She looked pitiful and said, "Master, I lay in bed just now and kept seeing the victim's horrific state. I'm so scared. Can I sleep in your room with you?"

Quickly adding, "Not in the same bed. I'll sleep on the floor. Having more people here makes me less scared."

Seeing her pitiful face, Lin Chen said, "Fine. If you want to sleep on the floor, go ahead."

"Thank you, Master."

Xia Miaoyan smiled happily. The wooden floor wasn't cold to lie on.

After setting up, Lin Chen suddenly asked, "Xia Miaoyan, do you really want to be my apprentice?"

At his words, she brightened, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. "Yes, Master Lin Chen, I really want to be your apprentice, or I wouldn't be pestering you."

Lin Chen pretended to be serious, "Alright, you can be my apprentice, but on one condition."

"What condition?" Xia Miaoyan's eyes sparkled.

"You have to warm my bed and sleep with Master tonight," Lin Chen teased.

Xia Miaoyan froze, then angrily said, "Master, how can you say that?"

"What did I do?" Lin Chen smiled.

"You're so handsome and decent-looking — how can you make such an improper request? What kind of Master makes that kind of demand of an apprentice?"

Lin Chen shrugged, "Is that so? I don't know about other Masters, but I'm an improper one."

Xia Miaoyan, seeing his mischievous expression, blushed deeply, said nothing, curled up in the blanket, and lay down.

Lin Chen gave up teasing her, put his book aside, turned off the light, and went to sleep.

The next morning, Lin Chen woke to find Xia Miaoyan had prepared breakfast.

Though simple, it tasted good.

"Master, is it tasty?" Xia Miaoyan asked expectantly.

"Mm, not bad," Lin Chen praised, eating a fried egg.

Xia Miaoyan smiled and said, "Later, take me to the market. I'll cook you my best dishes."

At that moment, Xia Miaoyan's phone rang. She answered, stepped aside, spoke briefly, then hung up.

Lin Chen saw her worried face and asked, "What's wrong? Something happened?"

"I was so scared by the victim yesterday, I forgot. Today I have to attend a competition," Xia Miaoyan said, holding the phone.

"What competition?" Lin Chen asked, curious.

"A Rubik's Cube competition." Xia Miaoyan asked, "Master, have you played Rubik's Cube?"

"A few times, not seriously," Lin Chen replied.

Xia Miaoyan grinned, "Master, wait here."

She ran to her room and grabbed her backpack.

From it, she took out a 3x3 Rubik's Cube — the common kind.

All six sides were uniform colors. Proudly, she handed it to Lin Chen and asked him to scramble it.

After scrambling, Xia Miaoyan said with a smile, "Master, watch closely."

She began twisting the cube.

In just over a minute, she solved it and waved it triumphantly before Lin Chen.

Then she explained the competition — a Rubik's Cube Speedcubing event.

Her school had a Rubik's Cube Enthusiast club, and today members were going to compete.

The prize was 30,000 yuan for first place, 10,000 for second, and 5,000 for third.

"Master, I'm going right now. You have nothing to do at home anyway. Come join us - there are many experts, especially our club president."

Lin Chen thought it over and, finding no pressing matters, took a taxi with Xia Miaoyan to the competition venue.

...

At Tianhai City government, the municipal leadership held a meeting.

The mayor specifically mentioned the Donglin University Dismemberment Case and was very pleased with its resolution.

The municipal secretary, mayor, and several deputy mayors were curious about Lin Chen — so young and capable.

If he joined the police force, he would be a great asset.

The municipal secretary looked at Deputy Director Sun, "Old Sun, is it true Lin Chen really doesn't want to be a cop?"
