Zhang Tian'ai's proposal to be friends was really a way to get closer to Lin Chen and eventually ask for help.

Her hand remained halfway extended; Lin Chen showed no intention of taking it.

Feeling awkward, she slowly withdrew her hand.

"Lin Chen, with your skills, don't you want to solve cases, uphold justice, and find the truth?" Zhang Tian'ai asked.

"I like solving cases," Lin Chen said, taking a bite of noodles, "but only cold cases. I have no interest in trivial petty crimes."

"The Donglin University Dismemberment Case counts as a cold case, right?" Zhang Tian'ai said.

"Yes. Liu Xiaojing is smart, but she slipped up once," Lin Chen replied lightly.

They chatted back and forth, and gradually Zhang Tian'ai felt less distant from Lin Chen.

Later, she drove Lin Chen back to 168 Changpo Road.

At home, Lin Chen showered and rested.

The next afternoon, as he read at home, there was a knock downstairs. Thinking it was the police, Lin Chen opened the door to find a strange girl.

She was sweet-faced, the girl-next-door type, about 168 cm tall, with a notably well-shaped figure—her chest prominently supported her top.

Despite her figure, she dressed modestly, wrapped up tightly.

"Who are you?" Lin Chen asked.

The girl's face lit up with excitement, "Hello Officer Lin, I'm a junior at Donglin University."

She extended her fair hand, smiling to reveal two small tiger teeth, making her look even cuter.

"A female student from Donglin University?" Lin Chen frowned. "How did you find my home?"

"Hehe," the girl said, "Officer Lin, yesterday when you solved the case on campus and deduced the truth on the playground, I watched the whole time. I admire you so much. Later, I overheard some cops discussing you and found out where you live."

"Oh, I forgot to say my name—I'm Xia Miaoyan, Officer Lin. Let's shake hands."

Xia Miaoyan reached out and shook Lin Chen's hand.

"You overheard my address by accident? You were watching for it, weren't you?" Lin Chen eyed her carefully.

Embarrassed, Xia Miaoyan touched her earlobe and confessed, "Officer Lin, I know you're the Great Detective. Honestly, yes, I was deliberately watching."

"Don't call me Officer Lin—I'm not a cop, just a freelancer," Lin Chen withdrew his hand and asked, "Why did you come to see me?"

"Well," Xia Miaoyan said earnestly, "I've wanted to be a police officer since I was young. After graduation, I plan to attend police academy. Yesterday, watching you solve our university's case, I thought you were amazing."

"So today, I want to ask you to take me as your apprentice."

"Go back. I don't take apprentices," Lin Chen shook his head firmly.

Xia Miaoyan's hopeful face immediately fell.

She grabbed Lin Chen's arm and shook it gently, "Mr. Lin, please? Teach me your detective skills. Then there will be a capable good cop in society."

Xia Miaoyan was beautiful, full of youthful energy, and with her figure, very charming.

"I don't take apprentices," Lin Chen repeated.

Seeing this, Xia Miaoyan let go of his arm and entered Lin Chen's room. "Wow, Master, your place is so messy. Let me clean it up for you."

She began tidying while Lin Chen protested. Xia Miaoyan ignored him, throwing out trash and mopping the floor diligently.

While mopping, she squatted, wiping the floor with a cloth.

Lin Chen stood at the doorway, watching this busty, slim-waisted, pert-hipped girl, unsure what to say.

Xia Miaoyan spent the whole afternoon cleaning; Lin Chen couldn't stop her.

By nightfall, the entire three-story house was spotless, though she had accidentally cut her hands twice.

Feeling bad for her hard work, Lin Chen said, "Let's go—I'll treat you to dinner."

"Okay, thanks, Master," Xia Miaoyan chirped happily.

"Don't call me Master—I never agreed to take you on," Lin Chen waved his hand.

Lin Chen took Xia Miaoyan to a restaurant. She chattered nonstop while they ate.

He could tell she was sincere about becoming a police officer.

After dinner, Lin Chen planned to stroll, and Xia Miaoyan followed.

Handsome Lin Chen and sweet, shapely Xia Miaoyan attracted many glances walking together.

Around ten o'clock, on a less crowded street, Xia Miaoyan talked about her university studies.

Suddenly, Lin Chen frowned, grabbed her arm, pulling her back several steps.

Xia Miaoyan was startled and about to ask why when a muffled thud sounded a few meters ahead.

A body had fallen from above, face down, bloodied and mangled.

"Ah!" Xia Miaoyan screamed and immediately threw herself into Lin Chen's arms.
