Xia Miaoyan's figure was truly impressive, her arms tightly wrapped around Lin Chen, pressing her slender body against him.

Lin Chen could feel her pounding heart and trembling body.

He glanced at the body a few meters away — fallen from a great height — then looked back at Xia Miaoyan.

"Miss Xia, you're going to be an excellent police officer someday. You're scared by a corpse—how will you ever become a cop?"

Lin Chen's tone was teasing.

Xia Miaoyan still held Lin Chen tightly, unwilling to let go.

"I... I... I don't care... I'm just scared... this is too frightening..." Xia Miaoyan's voice trembled.

Lin Chen put an arm around her slender waist and took a few steps back.

"All right, let go now."

Only then did Xia Miaoyan release him, but she turned away from the corpse, afraid to look.

The commotion from the falling body drew many eyes.

The timid screamed and fled, unwilling to look.

Some braver bystanders stood far off, pointing and whispering about the corpse.

Lin Chen pulled out his phone and called Zhang Tian'ai.

He hadn't had her number before, but she had asked for it the night before during dinner, and he saved it.

"Hello, Lin Chen," came Zhang Tian'ai's voice.

"Officer Zhang, what are you doing?" Lin Chen asked.

"Working overtime at the Police Station. What's up? Want to treat me to late-night snacks?" she laughed.

"Good, then. I just passed by Sanheng Rand saw a body fall from a building. You need to come handle it."

"What?" Zhang Tian'ai was carefree until Lin Chen said this; her eyes widened.

Lin Chen gave her the address and hung up.

Putting away his phone, Lin Chen approached the corpse.

It was a man with short hair, wearing a white shirt and casual pants, good-quality leather shoes on his feet.

A mechanical watch was on his left wrist; a gold ring on his right index finger.

He had landed face down; the impact crushed his nose and dented his face.

Blood poured from his distorted eyes, mouth, and nostrils; his face was mangled and rested in a pool of blood.

Lin Chen placed his hand on the man's neck, then looked up at the building he had fallen from.

"Master, any findings?" Xia Miaoyan was initially very scared but, thinking of her police academy aspirations, summoned courage to approach the corpse, though only with her peripheral vision.

Lin Chen withdrew his hand, "He's dead, but his body still retains warmth. That means he wasn't killed elsewhere and dumped. Judging by his temperature, he died very recently."

"Died just now?"

"Meaning he jumped to his death?" Xia Miaoyan asked.

Lin Chen said nothing and walked toward the building's entrance.

This street had little foot traffic; street lamps lit the main r but the alley between buildings had none, lit only dimly by distant streetlights.

As Lin Chen neared the door, it suddenly opened and a figure bolted out, fleeing into the alley's depths.

Without hesitation, Lin Chen chased after the figure.

Xia Miaoyan saw this and nervously called out, "Master, be careful..."

Lin Chen was about 40-50 meters behind the figure. The figure ran fast, but Lin Chen was faster.

Within five or six seconds, Lin Chen caught up.

A faint light hung on the alley wall, dim but enough to see.

"Get lost! Get lost!" The figure stopped and swung a hand at Lin Chen.

In his hand was a sharp steel knife, the blade reflecting the dim light.

Lin Chen did not dodge; he reached out and grabbed the man's wrist precisely.

With a slight twist, the man grimaced in pain, and the sharp knife clattered to the ground.

"Let go, or I'll kill you!" the man shouted.

Though one hand was trapped, he swung the other fist at Lin Chen.

Before the punch could land, Lin Chen's knee slammed into the man's stomach.

The man screamed, clutching his belly in pain as if about to vomit.

"Why run when you see me?" Lin Chen asked.

The man growled through the pain, "None of your business! Let go or you'll regret it!"

Lin Chen shook his head, placed his hands on the man's shoulders, and dislocated both arms, rendering them limp and powerless.

Ignoring the man's shouts and threats, Lin Chen grabbed his belt at the waist and dragged him like a sack of potatoes toward the alley exit.
