Without saying a word, Bai Tao directly handed the phone to Luo He.
"Hello, Auntie!" Luo He took the phone, and his heart started to race uncontrollably. After all, this was a video call, much different from chatting in a group text. His cheeks flushed slightly, looking almost as shy as a new son-in-law meeting his in-laws for the first time.
When Luo He's stunning face appeared on the screen, Tao's mom's eyes widened in surprise. She was so stunned that her lips trembled with excitement. "Ah! Luo... Luo He, hello! How are you so handsome! Old Bai, come look!" Tao's mom was completely caught off guard by Luo He's breathtaking beauty.
This reaction wasn't an exaggeration. Luo He was dazzling, even more so in person than in his photos. Tao's mom had already been captivated by his pictures, but now that she saw him in the flesh, she was utterly stunned. Tao's dad, too, was struck speechless by Luo He's good looks, silently wondering how someone could be so handsome.
Hearing his wife's excited shout, Tao's dad's face instantly darkened. He muttered to himself, I could just be watching quietly from the side, why do you have to drag me into this? How am I supposed to respond to this? After all, this is our son-in-law—would it be appropriate to compliment him for being handsome?
"Hello, Luo He," Tao's dad finally grumbled, reluctantly greeting him.
"Hello, Uncle," Luo He replied with a sweet smile, looking both obedient and charming.
Bai Tao, watching from the side, couldn't help but feel surprised. She hadn't expected that the usually confident and charismatic Luo He would be so docile in front of her parents.
Tao's mom soon realized she had been a little overenthusiastic and quickly switched gears to ask Luo He more practical questions—whether he had worked late, whether he had finished his tasks, and if he was eating well. Bai Tao listened, feeling her mom was getting a little too chatty. But seeing Luo He happily smiling in response, she understood that Luo He enjoyed this kind of caring attention.
"Wait, where's Tao? Call her over," Tao's mom suddenly said, though she kept chatting with Luo He. However, her mind was busy processing. When Bai Tao handed the phone to Luo He, she had noticed the two were sitting a little far apart. Even though the private room was spacious, shouldn't a couple eating together sit a little closer? Maybe share a sweet moment or two?
The more she thought about it, the more disappointed she became. How could her child be so awkward? Was she really one of those "straight women" as the rumors said? She was both upset and anxious, but as a mother, she had to keep teaching her child, no matter how hard it was.
Luo He, hearing Tao's mom's words, instinctively started to pass the phone back to Bai Tao. Then he realized Tao's mom was probably asking for Bai Tao to come to the camera, so he turned to look at her.
Bai Tao, helpless, walked over to stand behind Luo He. "Mom, what's up?" she asked, somewhat resigned.
Tao's mom looked at her with a disapproving expression. "What are you standing there for? You look like a block of wood!" Bai Tao felt an internal sigh. She could tell her mom had figured something out. She was probably about to start "creating drama."
"What now? We're still eating," Bai Tao grumbled.
"Who's in a rush for hotpot?" Tao's mom shot him a glare. "Sit closer, I'm taking a screenshot and a photo of you two."
Bai Tao immediately understood her mom's intentions and quickly retorted, "We're eating right now, what's the point of taking a picture? The video call quality won't be good anyway."
"What do you mean it won't look good? Look at how handsome Luo He is! As for you, who even cares if you look good?" Tao's mom snapped, adding, "Hurry up! I've been bragging to all my friends about my stunning son-in-law. They didn't believe me, and now I need proof!"
"You already have photos," Bai Tao said, raising an eyebrow.
"I do, but they say I just picked them off the internet and am comforting myself. Can you believe that?" Tao's mom's voice dripped with frustration.
Bai Tao was speechless for a moment, realizing her mom was just trying to "prove them wrong" to her friends. Luo He also quickly caught on to Tao's mom's motivations. He had sensed her constant attempts to matchmake him and Bai Tao, and now he understood—it was all to show off to her friends.
Bai Tao moved away from the camera, pretending to grab a chair. As soon as she stepped out of the frame, she glanced at Luo He and raised her hands in a clear gesture: This is my mom's request, don't blame me.
Luo He returned his look with a sweet smile. He knew this smile would reassure Bai Tao and keep things natural in front of her parents. As she expected, Tao's mom, seeing that smile, couldn't help but feel a warm satisfaction in her heart. That smile radiated sweetness, and it was clear to her that the relationship was more balanced than she had initially thought.
Tao's mom's suspicions were confirmed: Although Luo He was outstanding in every way, he was definitely more proactive in the relationship. Tao's mom felt proud of her child for finding such a great partner, but she couldn't help but feel a little frustrated and worried. If one person kept pushing forward while the other held back, this relationship might not last long.
Bai Tao finally sat down next to Luo He, and an almost invisible floral scent wafted into his nose. Though Bai Tao had never been in a romantic relationship before, he'd frequented bars and met many different types of people, so he could tell this wasn't perfume—it was Luo He's unique scent.
Bai Tao felt her heartbeat accelerate, her face heating up, almost as though she were drunk. Sitting beside Luo He, his handsome face so close, made her feel dizzy. The faint scent of his body lingered around her, and suddenly, she felt there was a warm current surging from some part of her body.
Just then, Tao's mom's voice rang out, breaking the tension. "Why are you sitting so far apart? Move closer!"
