"Is this the Grain Town?"
The next morning, Lin Feng arrived at the Grain Town.
It was several kilometers away from the Willow City Base. The town was bustling with people, and some Ghost Tamers were stationed here, likely guarding the area.
"Strange, why aren't these Ghost Tamers handling the starving ghost themselves?" Lin Feng thought.
As he walked through the area, one of the Ghost Tamers guarding the town looked at Lin Feng with suspicion.
"You're the one here to investigate the food shortage? You're so young. Do you think you can handle it?"
Lin Feng replied confidently, "Of course."
The Ghost Tamer nodded and said, "Well, since you're so confident, go ahead. Follow this road, you'll find a cave. The food is stored inside. The ghost is tricky and likes to hide, so you may need to wait there for a few days. Our Ghost Spirits are not good at tracking sneaky ones, and we can't stay away from the town for too long, so it's up to you guys to deal with it."
"The food is inside a mountain?" Lin Feng asked.
"Yes, the cave was chosen in case the town falls. People can hide there. It's well hidden, and along the way, you'll find gray flags. Just follow them," the Ghost Tamer explained.
"Got it."
Lin Feng didn't waste any more time. He set off toward the mountain.
As Lin Feng walked away, a few other Ghost Tamers gathered together and looked at his back.
"This kid is only fifteen or sixteen, right? And he's going after a Dangerous-Grade starving ghost? Boss, do you think he can handle it?"
The leader of the group looked grim. "Whether he can handle it is his choice. Every year, more than a hundred Ghost Tamers die in Willow City Base. Some die in large-scale Ghost Tides, others due to the reckless ones. If he wants to get himself killed, there's not much we can do about it."
With the Ghost Tamers still talking behind him, Lin Feng quickly disappeared up the mountain path.
As expected, along the path, Lin Feng saw several gray flags marking the way.
He checked the time—it was only 10 a.m., but the sky was still a dull gray.
It seemed the only place where there was sunlight was the Inner City of Willow City Base.
However, once Lin Feng reached a higher part of the mountain, he saw a patch of fields illuminated by a faint, not-so-bright sunlight.
"To get sunlight... I guess some methods are required," Lin Feng thought.
In this world, the outdoors hadn't been as heavily affected, and the vegetation was even more lush. By noon, sunlight would occasionally filter through, but only for about thirty minutes. This was considered a "safe time" by the Ghost Tamers, though it was only relatively safe.
Some ghosts had the ability to block sunlight, and some could appear even in broad daylight.
After taking in the natural scenery, Lin Feng pressed on.
About ten minutes later, he found the location—a hidden cave tucked into the mountainside.
The entrance was small, but inside, it was surprisingly spacious.
"If the town falls, they could seal the entrance with a golden-painted door, and the walls could be coated with gold as well. It would be relatively safe."
The two middle-aged men standing guard at the entrance nodded at Lin Feng.
"Master, are you here to deal with that ghost?"
Lin Feng nodded. "Aren't you afraid staying here?"
One of the men answered, "Of course, we're afraid, but we have our orders. We can't leave. The ghost doesn't seem to hurt people; it just eats the food. Even if we went inside, the food would continue to disappear unless the higher-ups handle it."
Lin Feng asked, "Why don't you just move the food?"
The other man replied, "The village chief says that if we move the food, the ghost might just go to another warehouse. It's better to keep it here, so the ghost stays put, and we can eliminate it."
Lin Feng nodded. "I'll go inside and take a look."
"Of course, we'll open the door for you."
The two men opened the entrance for him.
...
The cave was dry and contained several aluminum food storage bins. However, many of them were empty.
"It's only been a week, and it's already eaten several thousand pounds of food," the two men lamented, following Lin Feng deeper into the cave.
Lin Feng looked around, but the starving ghost hadn't shown itself yet. He wasn't sure where it was hiding.
After a while, Lin Feng took out the butterfly knot and called out.
"Tong Tong."
Instantly, the air in the cave seemed to chill several degrees.
The two middle-aged men instinctively took a few steps back, their faces pale.
"Tong Tong, can you find it?" Lin Feng asked.
Because of their high bond, Lin Feng felt Tong Tong could now understand some of his words.
Tong Tong stood still, staring into the cave, then she made a movement.
She turned and looked toward the outside of the cave.
"Outside?" Lin Feng asked.
Tong Tong didn't answer, and it seemed she still couldn't speak. However, she reacted again, and her white dress began to turn red.
The two middle-aged men watched in awe as the transformation took place. Even though they knew Tong Tong was Lin Feng's Ghost Spirit, they still couldn't help but feel a sense of dread.
Soon, Red-Skirt Tong Tong fully manifested, and something remarkable happened—her forehead began to crack open.
A black ghostly eye appeared.
When the two men saw the eye, their legs began to shake.
"Hmm, when did Tong Tong develop a third ghost eye?" Lin Feng wondered, intrigued.
Before he could think further, an unexpected turn of events occurred.
Tong Tong raised her hand and pointed directly at one of the middle-aged men.
Suddenly, a strange ghostly wail came from the man's pocket!
"What the—!"
Lin Feng quickly realized. The starving ghost had been hiding in his pocket all along!
