The system had finally arrived!
Ethan Wu had a big secret that he had never shared with anyone, even in a thousand years of looping. The truth was—he was a transmigrator.
This was Earth, just like the Earth he came from, yet he knew he had crossed over to a parallel universe. His "cheat," or "golden finger," was the constant reset of the same day.
The day he crossed over was July 7th, and since then, it had always been July 7th. At first, Ethan saw the time reset as a gift, but soon… he began to see it as a punishment, a torment.
Now, it seemed he had misunderstood. The true "cheat" had only activated after a thousand years!
"A trial! System, was it you? You trapped me in the same day for a thousand years as a trial?!"
"Ding! The Host was chosen by the God of Time and Space. Only by passing the trial could the system be unlocked."
"You mother@#$@#..." Ethan cursed the system with every word he could think of, but the system remained silent.
"Fine!" Ethan sighed, then chuckled. One had to look forward in life, not backward. He had once been someone without a future, but now, he had one. He had endured, so rather than complain, he'd make the most of this system.
He reviewed the system's stats carefully. Everything seemed ordinary—except his mental strength, which was astronomically high.
Due to the time resets, his physical abilities never improved. Only his memory and his soul could grow stronger! And if nothing else, his memory was astonishing. He could recall every single day of the past thousand years.
"I can reset time whenever I want now?" Ethan thought, and even though he had endured 365,000 resets, which had once brought him unbearable pain, he was now elated.
Active resets were completely different from passive ones. Being passively trapped in a single day was nothing like the freedom to choose when to reset and when to let time flow.
"Ding! A reminder to the Host: resetting time consumes Temporal Units, and the reset point is always at 7 a.m."
Hmm… each reset only cost one point! With 365,000 points, it felt like he'd never run out. He wouldn't waste them, but he could use as many as he wanted without worry.
"Ding! Additional reminder: resetting the same day multiple times will cause each subsequent reset to consume double the previous amount," the ethereal voice added.
"I get it," Ethan acknowledged.
After all… doubling is terrifying! Very terrifying.
1, 2, 4, 8, 16… The early resets seemed reasonable, but further along… by the 16th reset of the same day, he'd be consuming 32,768 points, followed by 65,536, 131,072, and so on. Eventually, he'd deplete his Temporal Units if he reset the same day too many times.
Of course, as long as he didn't go overboard with the same-day resets, it would be fine. He couldn't even think of a reason why he'd need to repeat a single day more than once or twice.
Then Ethan looked over his [Host Abilities].
"How do I expand it?"
"Focus your gaze and blink," the system instructed.
Following the prompt, Ethan's interface immediately "exploded" into a huge list.
A total of 1,354 skills. Most people could acquire maybe a dozen skills over a lifetime—like driving, cooking, and other daily life skills, with modest proficiency. Exceptional individuals might acquire a few dozen.
But Ethan? He had over a thousand, many at exceptionally high levels. Among them were 103 languages, each at level 9! Mastering a language took constant practice, but with infinite time, he could learn as many languages as he wanted.
He had a thousand years, 365,000 days.
As he looked over this massive list, an overwhelming sense of accomplishment filled his heart. He hadn't wasted those 365,000 days. This vast array of skills was the best testament to his dedication.
In the past, these abilities might not have meant much to him; they had seemed pointless. But now, time was finally moving forward. His skills had a purpose once more!
There's a certain pride in life.
For some, that pride comes in the form of fame, wealth, a bigger house, more money, or higher social status. Such pursuits are common to everyone.
Some say simplicity is true happiness. Ethan disagreed. Given the chance to rise, who would willingly settle for mediocrity?
Of course, for a select few, this sentiment might be wrong, for they had seen all life had to offer. They had gained perspective through life's highs and lows, and their acceptance of simplicity was a wisdom, not a concession to limitations.
"Hey, I just thought of something…" Ethan suddenly pondered. "If the thousand years were a trial, what would happen if someone failed? I can't die, even suicide resets me. Wouldn't everyone eventually pass?"
"Ding! Reminder: The reset covers universal time and the Host's physical state, but it does not protect the Host's soul. If the Host falls into madness during the trial, the soul will begin to weaken and eventually dissipate!"
"Understood." Ethan raised an eyebrow and smirked.
He was grateful he had been strong enough. There were times he had nearly lost his sanity, but he had endured, figured things out, and started actively learning and transforming himself.
"What's going on with you…?" A hesitant voice spoke from outside the bathroom.
Ethan turned and saw Chloe Mu, wrapped in a blanket and holding a baseball bat. She no longer had that fierce look; instead, her face was filled with worry.
Chloe was actually concerned about… Ethan's mental state!
Last night, she'd thought Ethan was either insane or an amusing liar. But after waking up this morning, she had pretended to be angry. She never believed in Ethan's "time reset" story, so there was no real reason for her to be upset.
But then, after Ethan woke up, he had dashed into the bathroom, laughing hysterically, shouting strange things, and pounding on the wall like a madman.
Chloe had been standing outside the bathroom door, watching him the whole time.
She had seen his hands, covered in blood.
She had watched as he went from rage to excitement, to a bizarre sense of joy.
Chloe was terrified. She thought he might really be mentally unstable, possibly even violent. His hands were bleeding, and he didn't even seem to notice.
"Uh… I'm fine, perfectly fine," Ethan said, smiling at Chloe.
"Your hands…" Chloe pointed at his hands, her worry intensifying.
Ethan raised his hands to see the blood-streaked, bruised skin. It hurt, but not terribly. Ethan had endured worse—he was the man who had attempted suicide hundreds of times, even once jumping into boiling oil. He could endure the worst pain imaginable.
"Hmm…" Ethan examined his hands, frowning slightly.
It would take at least a couple of weeks for these wounds to heal, and he'd probably be left with scars.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Suddenly, loud knocking came from the front door.
"Huh?" Ethan glanced out of the bathroom, calling out, "Who is it?"
"We're looking for a couple—one man, one woman—who drove a white Lamborghini to this area last night. They're likely staying somewhere nearby…" a gruff voice called from outside.
Oh, no!
They were here already!
Chloe's face went pale with fear.
Ethan signaled Chloe to stay silent and then shouted back, "No, haven't seen anyone like that."
"Open up. We need to check," the voice outside responded.
Instead of opening the door, Ethan quickly went to the window and peered down into the alley.
He saw a group of unfamiliar young men searching around, going in and out of different buildings. From his vantage point on the fifth floor, he could see his white Lamborghini parked at the end of the alley.
Around the Lamborghini, a dozen or so men were gathered, two of them crouched down, inspecting the car.
They were Wayne Wang's men!
"Open the door! Why aren't you answering? Is it you? Open up!" The men outside began shouting, followed by loud bangs as they tried to force the door open.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
They had started trying to break in.
